About Ian
Well, I am a husband and a brother (soon to be a father!!!), a Christian and a Scouser, a professional singer/songwriter; vocal producer, arranger and director; session performer, pianist and teacher.
I have been involved in music since the age of 5 when I started having piano lessons, and despite a typical teenage rebellion, I am hopefully about to pass my Grade 8 piano exam in 2011!! I have a good knowledge of chords and I am a proficient sight-reader, which makes me a skilled accompanist to those whom I teach.
I have been singing since the age of 7, which was when I joined a semi-professional choir in the town that I grew up in and I managed to obtain my Bishops’ Chorister award at the age of 12. My voice broke at 15 which I refused to accept, which bizarrely led me discover a love for harmony because I couldn’t sing the melody of my favourite songs an octave down. This was when I discovered Gospel Music, which is my absolute favourite music in the world (thank you Whoopi Goldberg and Sister Act II). I also played the violin for a time. I stopped because my arm hurt a lot and I sounded like something dying most of the time.
I mention Gospel Music above as I specialize in the study, arranging, direction, composing and performing of this exciting genre and have done since about 1998 when I joined the Liverpool Love and Joy Gospel Choir. This was fantastic five-year long experience that allowed me to sing all over the country and abroad.
In 2000 I managed to successfully audition (after 4 attempts!) for the internationally renowned Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), founded by Sir Paul McCartney. I continued my studies and passion for Gospel Music during my studies and graduated with a BA(hons) in Music in 2003. Ironically I am now a full-time Teaching Fellow at LIPA where I teach one-to-one voice, singing for actors and dancers, a cappella and Gospel.
After having studied many different vocal techniques I came across “Speech Level Singing” in 2004 and I haven’t looked back. The technique has enabled me to gain a balanced voice from chest to head via a solid mix and has added a usable octave to my singing voice. I am now a certified Speech Level Singing Teacher and I am currently the only male teacher in the North of England that delivers this amazing technique. I now spend most of my time helping people to navigate that tricky bridge area of their voice, regardless of vocal style and genre, giving them the freedom to connect their lower and higher registers without straining.
When I am not at LIPA I can be found directing Sanctified Gospel Choir, a thirty-strong vocal ensemble based out of Frontline Church, in Wavertree, Liverpool. I founded the choir in 2003 which originally consisted of a line-up of twelve singers. The original choir went on to win the Best Newcomer Award in the 2004 Gospel Entertainment and Music (GEM) Awards. After a year long sabbatical during which I married the amazing Miriam Davidson, I reformed the choir which has continuously gone from strength to strength.
