About Ian
Teaching people to sing isn’t just a job for me: it’s a passion. I’ve been lucky enough to develop my singing in a wide range of backgrounds, from formal to casual, from solo to choir, and in styles from classical to gospel. The most important thing I’ve learned is that every client is equally important and while it’s rewarding to help brilliant singers perfect their performance, there’s just as much satisfaction from helping novice singers quite literally find their voice.
My formal qualifications include a BA (Hons) in Performing Arts Music from the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts; Level 3 in teaching Speech Level Singing (www.speechlevelsinging.com); and grade 7 piano from the Associated Board Royal School of Music. I’m currently working towards grade 8 and studying for an MA in Music. (In case you’re wondering why I mention piano qualifications, it’s because it means I can accompany you but still give you my full attention.)
Valuable as those qualifications are, I’ve also had the pleasure of building up years of experience that have truly helped me develop both my own singing and my ability to teach others. For example, I sang with the Liverpool Love and Joy Gospel Choir to audiences as diverse as church congregations and football stadium crowds. I’m now vocal director of another Liverpool choir, Joyful Redemption, and continue to run my own 30-strong group, the Sanctified Gospel Choir, which won the best newcomer category in the Gospel Entertainment Music awards. As well as gospel music, I’ve also worked in a range of styles as a session singer for the BBC, Liverpool Playhouse and Sense of Sound.
Turning to teaching, I currently work with around 50 students each week in one-on-one lessons at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), covering every musical style you can think of. I also teach in cyberspace, being one of the teachers on the iPad and iPhone app VocalizeU. This allows students anywhere in the world to connect to me for a live lesson, something that still blows my mind every time!
One of my areas of expertise is Speech Level Singing. I’ll happily talk about this until the cows come home, but the short version of the concept is that it’s all about training your vocal cords in the same way as an athlete trains his muscles. By learning to control your larynx, you’ll find it easier to smoothly cover a wide vocal range without an uncomfortable “break” in your voice that can be distracting not just for your audience but for your own concentration.
I don’t mind confessing the work I’ve done here has left me a little obsessed with the way the human voice works: indeed, I’ve even collaborated with the Royal Liverpool Hospital’s Ear, Nose and Throat and Speech Therapy Department on quickly but accurately diagnosing vocal problems.
But enough about me: now it’s time to invite you to get in touch so that I can continue sharing my passion and help singing become a richer and more joyful part of your life.
