Did you know that nearly 30% of the population are

Did you know that nearly 30% of the population are said to suffer from the affects of acid reflux?

Acid Reflux can have a really negative impact on the vocal cords, causing them to dry out and become irritated.

If you unsure whether you suffer from acid reflux or not, ask yourself the following questions -

1. Do you suffer from heartburn?

2. Do you feel as though you constantly have to clear your throat even though you’re not ill?

3. Do you absolutely dread using your voice first thing in the morning?

Heartburn is not “normal” and you shouldn’t just put up with it. If you regularly suffer from heartburn then the chances are that your vocal cords are also suffering as well. Take some Gaviscon Advance (available from your pharmacist) after every meal and last thing at night before you go to bed. This should help your vocal cords to recover from the acid (or pepsin – another stomach chemical) damage. If you still suffer from heartburn then you should consult with your GP as soon as possible. You don’t have to suffer in silence!

There are other things that you can do as well. For example, you can raise the head end of your bed by placing books or “yellow pages” under the bed legs. This will allow you to sleep on a slight incline which can prevent the acid from creeping up your oesophagus at night. You can also avoid eating after 7pm at night, going to bed on a full stomach is bound to encourage acid reflux. You can also cut down on certain foods, drinks and alcohol.

The main point is that more people suffer from this condition than you would think and it is really damaging for singers to “put up with it”. Do something about it.

The following contains some useful advice for people who believe that they may be suffering from the effects of Acid Reflux

Maybe it’s the fact that we are sharing of ourselves

Maybe it’s the fact that we are sharing of ourselves with people that makes singing difficult or hard to understand at times. The voice is so personal. It’s ours and although we may share traits of it with close family members, it is still unique. It’s also how we express ourselves, and therefore if it comes under criticism then that criticism can be interpreted as a criticism of self. Tricky stuff.

I believe that singing is one of the most liberating activities that an individual can take part in. Singing is also very healthy from an emotional point of view, whether you are expressing joy or singing the blues so to speak. It is our right to sing or express ourselves through song and I love to help people “find their voice”.

Most of us are put off singing because we can’t bear the thought of being that exposed. Others who can bear the thought, are often put off by singing teachers and other singers.

I have encountered a number of different singing techniques and singing teachers. The best teachers are the ones who let you express yourself in whichever style of music you prefer and don’t try to turn you into them. The best technique is one that gives you a foundational awareness of your voice that can be applied to any style of singing. I hope that teacher is me.
